Wire Wrapped Necklace With Beads

When teaching someone how to wire wrap with beads for the first time I always tell them the best way to learn is to sit down with a bowl of beads and a spool of wire and make one long wire wrapped necklace. The great thing about making one long continuous strand of wire wraps with beads is that you can see your progress with each wire wrap. Then once you are comfortable with how to do a basic wire wrap you can just cut off the bad part and keep the good part of the wire wrapped necklace with beads.

Materials & Tools That you will need: One round nose plier, one needle nose plier, one flat nose plier or a second needle nose plier. One strand of beads that are 6–8mm in size and a container or bowl to put the beads in. One spool of 22 gage Artistic Wire.

  1. Measure and cut ten, two inch pieces of 22 gage wire. This is just to get you started but you will have to cut more.

2. Poor the beads that you are going to use into a small dish for easy access.

3. Take one of the 2” pieces of wire and place the wire in the tip of your round nose plier so that one side is slightly longer than the other side.

when looking at the picture notice how the left side is slightly longer than the right.

4. Hold the round nose plier so they are perpendicular to your chest (same angle that you see in the picture) Now push the longer side of the wire away from you to make an L shape.

When holding the round nose plier perpendicular to your chest and looking down at the wire you should have a nice L shape from pushing the longer wire away from your chest.

5. Now push the shorter piece of wire towards your chest so that it starts to wrap around the outside tip of the round nose plier.

Notice how when you push the shorter wire towards your chest the wire starts to wrap around the outside of the round nose plier.

6. Continue wrapping the shorter wire all the way around the outside tip of the round nose plier.

Continue pushing the shorter wire all the way around until the shorter wire is almost lined up with the longer wire. Both ends of the wire should be pointing the same direction.

7. Now adjust your grip with the round nose plier so they are parallel to your chest and turn the wire so that the wire is pointing out towards the side of the round nose plier. Same view that you see in the picture below.

8. Take your needle nose plier and grab the end of the short wire to pull the short wire across the top of the long wire.

Use your needle nose pliers to grab the end of the shorter wire.
Just pull the shorter wire straight across the top of the longer wire

9. Carefully pull the wire off of the round nose plier and place the loop between the tips of the needle nose plier. When you do this you will notice a little notch in the wire and that little notch will help when you are on step ten.

To keep your nice loop place the loop flat between your needle nose pliers or your flat nose pliers.
This helps to keep the nice round shape.

10. Using your other needle nose plier take the end of the shortest wire and wrap it around the longer wire 3 times.

Using the needle nose pliers pull the shorter wire by the end and wrap the wire down and around. As you wrap the shorter wire around the longer wire the wire wraps will naturally fill in that little notch.

11. If there is a long piece of wire after wrapping it three times, use the snips to trim the end of the wire.

Just cut enough so there is nothing poking out. If you do not have any excess wire then skip on down to step 12.

12. Using the needle nose plier carefully tuck the tip of the wire that you had just trimmed by giving the tip of the wire a little pinch with the needle nose plier.

Just give the needle nose plier a little squeeze to tuck the end of the wire in. Then run your finger across the wire wrap to make sure you do not feel anything sharp.

13. Now you should have a nice loop at one end.

You are half way done with your first wire wrap!

14. String the bead on the wire and make sure that you leave a gap between the round nose plier and the bead. The gap should be big enough to wrap half way around the tip of the round nose plier.

The gap should be just big enough the wrap half way around the tip of the round nose plier.

15. This time you are going to bend the side with the bead towards you.

Notice the side ways L shape after you bent the bead and wire towards you.

16. Wrap the other side of the wire without the bead all the way around the tip of the round nose plier so that the wire lines up on the other side of the bead.

Wrap the wire all the way around the outside of the round nose pliers so the wire has started to make a nice loop.

17. To finish the wire wrap repeat steps 8–12.

18. Congratulations on completing your first wire wrap with a bead. Now pick up a second piece of wire and repeat steps 3–8, then jump on back down to step 19.

Good job on completing your first wire wrap! Do not worry if it is not perfect, just keep going and it will get easier.

19. Before placing the loop between the tip of the needle nose plier attach the first wire wrap to the open loop.

You want to attach your first wire wrap through the open loop before you wrap the wire around and close the loop.

20. Now place the open loop between the tip of the needle nose plier and pinch down ever so slightly to hold in place.

Use your needle nose plier or your flat nose plier to hold the loop flat to keep the shape when wrapping the wire around.

21. Repeat steps 8–12 to complete the wire wrap.

After completing steps 8–12 the two wire wraps should be connected.

Continue all of the steps until you have had enough practice or have reached the desired necklace length. Remember that it does get easier the more you practice.
